Our recap of droidcon Berlin 2018

What an amazing three days in Berlin and what an amazing 10 years of droidcon that we were able to celebrate with you. Who could have imagined in 2009 that the first droidcon in Berlin, attended by about 200 developers discussing a then little-known open source mobile operating system would turn into such a massive event.
The overall consensus is that droidcon Berlin 2018 will go down as the best German droidcon ever. Three days, 5 Tracks, over 100 sessions and and more than 1200 attendees makes this droidcon a record-breaker.
We were thrilled (and pleasantly surprised) at how many of you came out and contributed to the success of the new Interactive Day. Many thanks to Danny Preussler and Friedger Müffke for all their efforts in organizing some fantastic panels and to everyone in the community who contributed to over 15 sessions on topics ranging from Machine Learning, Kotlin, AR and more. We couldn’t have been more thrilled to have over 750 developers checked in for the Interactive Day…a new record for the former barcamp day!
Jake Wharton got things kicked off on Day Two with a fantastic keynote on how the lines between native and web are blurring. The day continued with the launch of the first ever Android Enterprise Summit which way keynoted by Sean Ginevan, Head of Global Strategy & Market Enablement from Google. Almost 50 talks were given on Day Two with numerous in-depth workshops on AI, TensorFlow, Flutter and building native apps with SAP.
The Party kicked into high gear on Tuesday night with beer, wine, snacks and an array of XXL games and 80’s era arcades.
Day Three kicked off with Job van der Voort from GitLab delivered an inspiring keynote about running your business like an open source project. He also gave an impassioned defense of work-life-balance and how companies can remain productive while doing your best work in pajama pants. The day continued with 47 more sessions and ended with almost everyone in the lounge area watching the World Cup and cheering on “Die Mannschaft”…to a not so stellar finish. But the good mood returned quickly with more XXL Games and our droidcon family playing Kicker together and creating their own World Cup magic.
As you know, droidcon couldn’t happen without the support of the community and those who are willing to really get engaged. A special thanks goes out to our program committee headed by Sergii Zhuk and the rest of the committee members.
We think you’ll agree that we had amazing sponsors this year who help make droidcon a reality. Without their support we would not be able to deliver such an incredible experience and the high quality programming that you have come to expect. A big thanks goes out to our Gold Sponsors, Huawei and the Google Android Enterprise Team. Our Silver Sponsors – HERE, Blockstack, SAP, WizyEMM, Cirlcon, Amazon Alexa, Amazon Appstore, EbayTech and Zebra made a huge contribution to the show. Our Bronze sponsors Jobsens.ai, Greenspector, Google Developers, eDreams ODIGEO, N26 and ObjectBox filled the exhibit area with fun and interesting stands. On behalf of all the speakers and the droidcon team, many thanks to Pluralsight for an amazing party on Monday night.
Even though droidcon Berlin has just wrapped up, our droidcon HQ team is already planning for next year. For the first time, we have released 150 suuuuuuuuper Early Bird tickets that are on sale for only 149€. Get your tickets (here) while they last.
In the upcoming months we are committed to even more engagement with our droidcon community. Greg Fawson talked in the keynote and during a workshop at the show about the launch of our Global Community Platform. We are excited to make this your new digital home for all things droidcon and Android development. Expect to see great things coming soon from our team about the community platform.
We will also be continuing our engagement with the community in the run-up to droidcon 2019. We will be seeing you at Meetups and Workshops organized by our HQ team.
Thanks again for being part of our droidcon family and making 2018 a year to remember.
We look forward to seeing you again,
Your droidcon HQ Team
